“Comet Atlas” is getting a tail.

Could it be that we’re about to get a bright comet, visible to the naked eye to everyone in the northern hemisphere, just as the coronavirus pandemic reaches its peak?

Ken Zoll will present a talk entitled “Sinagua Meteorites from Meteor Crater.” Ken has been working in conjunction with Arizona State University’s Center for Meteorite Studies on meteorites found at Native American ruins in the Verde Valley and beyond.

Wrapped in a brass foil ribbon with a photo of the Barringer Crater and a quote from “Romeo & Juliet”, Shoemaker’s ashes were launched on January 6, 1998 and a year later, when the vessel’s primary mission had ended, it deliberately crashed into the lunar south pole, where it remains to this day.

The tiny fireball that flew over Japan in 2017 came from an asteroid that could threaten Earth in 10 million years or so. Scientists are trying to use these little meteors to hunt larger objects.

Geological processes on Earth typically move very slowly. But the impact of a meteorite, a rock from space, is one example of changes that occurred on Earth very quickly.

It will pass Earth at around 22:57 GMT tonight, at which point it will be around 3.8 million miles away from our planet.

While that might sound far, it’s deemed a ‘close approach’ by NASA.
